The Key Individual Who Could Transform Aston Villa in This January Transfer

Aston Villa reportedly considers pursuing Barcelona outcast Marcos Alonso in January, who is expected to leave the squad soon.

Full-back Marcos Alonso of Barcelona is reportedly considering a return to the Premier League due to his lack of playing time this season. Aston Villa is keen to sign him during the forthcoming January transfer window as a result.

Marcos Alonso signed a free agent contract with Barcelona just over a year ago, with his Chelsea contract expiring. He has played for the Catalan giants in 37 games. However, with just 149 minutes of football played thus far, the seasoned defender is no longer seen as an essential player of the team.

Alonso has mostly been utilised as a backup by Alejandro Balde, who has established himself as a first-team regular; although, Joao Cancelo, a summer loan acquisition, can also operate off of Alonso’s wing.

However, Alonso’s circumstances may have been considerably different because he was extremely likely to leave Barcelona during the summer transfer window. Reports surfaced that the 32-year-old Spanish player was set to leave, and teams in Saudi Arabia showed interest. There were also brief links with Manchester United.

However, nothing happened because Xavi also wanted to hold onto the left-back and Alonso never considered leaving.

In the summer of 2024, Alonso’s deal with Barcelona ends. In addition, given his reduced playing time this season, it appears that a January departure is a real possibility. Aston Villa is looking into the prospect of signing him in January.

Unai Emery’s desire to add a left-back during the next transfer window is hardly surprising. The West Midlands team needs to bolster its back line with additional talent and depth. Alex Moreno is now out with an injury, and Lucas Digne has been linked to a move away from Aston Villa.

A deal would be worthwhile if Aston Villa can recruit Alonso this winter for a fair price. Alonso, who can play both left back and wing back, has shown his mettle in the Premier League with Chelsea and Bolton Wanderers. He might be a valuable addition for the Lions.

He possesses the ability to have an immediate effect and will probably give their attack a new twist in the future. In the weeks ahead of the January transfer window, it will be intriguing to see how this tale develops.
