Fabrizio Romano confirms Donny van de Beek not in United squad due to transfer ‘negotiations’

Prominent football journalist Fabrizio Romano has today confirmed that Donny van de Beek has not travelled with the Manchester United squad to London because of transfer ‘negotiations’

The journalist put to rest earlier this week speculations about Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek rejoining one of his old clubs. However, another avenue for departure still stands.

Last season, Van de Beek would have been optimistic about rekindling his form at Manchester United, especially with the appointment of fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag. Their successful spell together in the Eredivisie means the two are no strangers.

Nevertheless, the midfielder, aged 26, made only 10 appearances in total throughout the season. A combination of injuries and intense competition for slots in the squad played a part. Ten Hag had an abundance of talent to choose from, including the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Fred, Scott McTominay, and Bruno Fernandes.

Now, with Van de Beek back in form, it’s still uncertain if he will have a significant role in United’s upcoming campaign. While there are rumours that United might part ways with Fred and McTominay, they’ve bolstered their squad by acquiring Mason Mount from Chelsea. Additionally, Ten Hag’s eyes seem set on adding another midfielder, possibly Sofyan Amrabat or Amadou Onana.

Interestingly, even Ten Hag appears hesitant to rely on Van de Beek. Hence, the Dutch international, capped 19 times, is on the lookout for a fresh start.

A recent piece from The Sun suggested that Ajax, Van de Beek’s former footballing club, might be contemplating a bid to bring the sidelined Manchester United player back home. For Van de Beek, such a move would be akin to a homecoming, offering him a platform to rediscover his magic. Plus, it would mean returning closer to his loved ones.

But, to Van de Beek’s disappointment, a transfer back to Ajax is off the table. Romano, taking to Twitter, clarified that there haven’t been any substantial discussions between the player and Ajax, countering prior rumours.

But, all hope isn’t lost for Van de Beek. His exit from Old Trafford might still materialise this transfer window and even more with being left of todays squad. The midfielder has reportedly agreed to a shift to La Liga side, Real Sociedad. The allure of Sociedad’s project, who secured a fourth-place finish in La Liga last season, seems to be a significant draw for him.

Negotiations between Manchester United and Sociedad are in progress. The likelihood is that Van de Beek will move to the Spanish club on a year-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent come summer 2024.

According to Romano’s most recent update, discussions between the clubs are ongoing and hopefully with not being in the squad in London, a transfer solution can be found between the clubs & player.
