Harry Amass, a 16-year-old prospect from Watford, was signed by Manchester United last week.

The club has invited a promising young player from Northern Ireland to the club for a trial as it continues to look for the best young players in the British Isles.

Christopher Atherton, a young prospect, recently visited Carrington for a trial, according to Manchester United Youth on Instagram.

Christopher Atherton played in an under-15s friendly game at Carrington at the weekend.

The youngster previously created headlines when he made his first team debut for Glenavon at just 13 last year.

In doing so he became the youngest ever footballer in Britain to play a professional game. He has now made four appearances in total, each as a substitute, and for just over an hour in total minutes.

Chelsea have shown interest too

The Belfast Telegraph reported last year how clubs across the UK have been interested in signing Atherton, including Manchester City and Chelsea.

He had been on trial at Chelsea last year but is keeping his options open for now. Scottish sides Rangers and Dundee United have shown interest.

Now 14, the Northern Ireland under-16s international is on trial at Manchester United, sharing a picture of his Red Devils kit on his Instagram stories on Saturday.

What ends up happening with Atherton’s trial at Manchester United is yet to be determined, but it is understandable that the Red Devils are interested in taking a first hand look at him.

If this ends up being a deal United complete, United would not rush him into the first team mix, he would slot into his age group and have to prove himself. It’s a challenge Atherton could be tempted by.
