Boo Year’s Eve: Packers embarrass Vikings in pivotal game

With a 33-10 rout in Minneapolis, the rival Green Bay Packers sent the Vikings to bed long before midnight on New Year’s Eve.

If the Vikings (7-9) defeat Detroit on Sunday and receive a lot of support, they still have a chance to qualify for the postseason. What Minnesota needs is this:

While Vikings rookie Jaren Hall mishandled the ball twice and was benched during a disappointing first half, Jordan Love completed his passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. In an absolutely overpowering effort inside U.S. Bank Stadium, Green Bay (8-8) pounded out 470 total yards to Minnesota’s 211, and the Pack controlled the ball for more than 37 minutes.

This season, Minnesota has dropped six of their eight home games.

The ball tipped off backup tight end Johnny Mundt’s hands and was intercepted after Hall threw behind him during the Vikings’ second drive of the game, which saw them hold Green Bay to a field goal. Johnny Mundt was starting in place of the injured T.J. Hockenson. After two plays, Love found Jayden Reed for a 33-yard touchdown pass, which gave the Packers the lead.

With 2:28 remaining in the first quarter and five offensive plays later, the Vikings were forced to punt the ball back to the Packers on a fourth-and-4 situation. It was also a poor punt, going only thirty yards to the Green Bay 26-yard line.

The Packers advanced the ball into Minnesota territory and had an opportunity to strengthen their lead with more scores, but Love lofted a throw on fourth-and-1 from the 24 that was intercepted by a wide-open Bo Melton, forcing a turnover on downs. But the Vikings, as they had done all night, did not capitalise.

With 12:35 remaining in the second quarter, Hall connected with Justin Jefferson for his first pass of the game, a 13-yard pass. After that completion, he hit rookie Jordan Addison with a 20-yard pass over the middle. However, he was sacked for a loss of 10 yards after two plays, which set up a third-and-16 situation where Greg Joseph eventually tied the score for the entire season with a 54-yard from goal.

Love scored his fourth touchdown of the season running into the end zone as Green Bay responded to Minnesota’s three points with seven. With 3:59 remaining in the first half, it completed a 10-play, 75-yard drive, giving the visitors a 17-3 lead.

The Vikings gained a first down on the subsequent drive, but another sack put them in a third-and-16 position. Hall’s pass stumbled high and incomplete, forcing the offense—which had amassed 82 yards in total—to punt once more.

With 39 seconds remaining, Green Bay punted the ball, setting off a disastrous sequence.

With eight seconds remaining in the half, Preston Smith outran left tackle Christian Darrisaw to stripsack Hall, and the Packers needed just three plays to begin sealing the Vikings’ fate. Love hit Reed on a crosser, and the nimble rookie broke tackles from Harrison Smith to reach the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown and a 23-3 lead.

That was the end of Hall’s night. He completed with 67 yards on five of ten passes, one interception, and one fumble loss.

The Vikings began the second half under Nick Mullens’ direction, and as soon as he took over, they began to lose ground. After a false start on Darrisaw, an illegible player downfield penalty on Ed Ingram, and a sack for a loss of eight yards, first-and-10 at the Green Bay 32 turned into a 2nd-and-28 at the 50.

However, they recovered 14 yards when Mullens found Jefferson for 21 yards and a first down on third-and-14. This put them on the 15-yard line. After considering all of the options, head coach Kevin O’Connell decided to go for it on a fourth-and-four from the 9-yard line. However, this move backfired since Mullens was hit while throwing, and the ball sailed incomplete towards Jefferson in the end zone.

Then, in precisely eight minutes, Green Bay covered 91 yards on 13 plays, including a nine-yard touchdown pass from Love to a wide-open Melton.

The Vikings punted on the opening play of the fourth quarter with a 30-3 deficit, and special teams star Deep in Packers territory, Najee Thompson forced a mishandled punt that was recovered by Minnesota. The Vikings used the recovery to set up a six-yard touchdown pass from Mullens to Mundt, bringing them within twenty points at 30–10.
