One of Town’s two ex-Gunners will be permitted to depart Kenilworth Road during the transfer window by the Luton manager.
In an effort to gain regular first team action, Luton manager Rob Edwards will look to let one of his backup goalkeepers, James Shea or Matt Macey, leave the club during the transfer season. Edwards hasn’t revealed which goalkeeper will be leaving, though.
The Town manager had a protracted hunt to find the two goalkeepers he wanted to compete for the first team shirt at Kenilworth Road after promotion to the Premier League and his choice not to re-sign Nottingham Forest loanee Ethan Horvath.
He finally completed that quest last week, Tim Krul joining from Norwich City to challenge Belgian Thomas Kaminski, who was signed from Blackburn Rovers earlier this month and went on to start the opening day 4-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.
As a result of those two joining the team, Edwards must now decide what to do with Shea, who has been with Town since they were in League Two and has made 107 appearances during that time, and Macey, who was brought back for a second stint by former manager Nathan Jones last summer and spent the final months of the 2022–23 season on loan with League One Portsmouth.
He stated: “We will want to try and help one of them out so they can get more game time. Regarding the likelihood that one of the two former Arsenal goalies would leave.
We’ll have a look at it since we can’t have an overly large team in terms of numbers.
When asked if he had made up his mind about exactly who that would be, the Luton boss gave a coy “I have” response.
