Isaac Hayden is expected to have a medical at Luton Town on Monday before joining the club on a season-long loan from Champions League-bound Newcastle United.
The 28-year-old has spent the last year on the periphery of Eddie Howe’s squad, with the Magpies failing to play in the Premier League for the entire 2022-23 season.
Hayden was loaned out to Championship club Norwich City in search of first-team football, but the midfielder only made nine starts during an injury-plagued spell at Carrow Road.
The former Arsenal youth product has appeared 171 times for the North-East giants since joining from Hull City in the summer of 2016, scoring seven goals in that time.
According to Football Insider, Hayden will have a medical at Luton Town before moving to Kenilworth Road for the 2023-24 season.
According to the report, the move is only temporary, and the Englishman will return to St James’ Park at the end of the season, regardless of whether the Hatters retain their Premier League status.
Hayden is understood to be surplus to requirements at Newcastle, with the 28-year-old failing to appear in any of the club’s pre-season or early-season competitive matches.
The former England youth international is said to be training separately from Howe’s first-team squad, with the Magpies hoping to offload him before the transfer window closes on Friday.
Hayden’s current contract at St James’ Park expires in three years, but the midfielder is unlikely to be a Newcastle player in 2026.
Luton Town are in the Premier League for the first time in their history, and manager Rob Edwards is looking for players with Premier League experience as the transfer window closes.
Tahith Chong and Jacob Brown have joined the Kenilworth Road club from the Football League, but the Hatters are hoping to add a few Premier League players to their ranks.
Former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley joined the club after leaving Nice, and the playmaker is expected to be a standout performer for the top-flight newcomers.
Luton Town have struggled in their first two league games, losing 4-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion before falling 3-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out.
On Tuesday, Kenilworth Road will host Gillingham in the second round of the EFL Cup, before the Hatters’ unique home makes its Premier League debut when West Ham United visits on Friday night.
