West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer’s move to Luton has stalled due to personal terms, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The newspaper journalist shared via his Patreon that the proposed move for Palmer to join Luton has come to an end as a result of the newly-promoted club’s need to insert relegation wage clauses into their contracts.
Luton had offered a higher wage than Palmer was making in the Championship, but the clause would see this wage drop dramatically if Luton are relegated after just one season in the Premier League, despite a fee being agreed.
West Brom are prepared to let him go
West Brom are evidently prepared to let Palmer go this summer, with him having made 23 appearances for the club in the Championship last season, as the deal suited West Brom’s need to bring in money from player sales in an attempt to balance the books.
The Express and Star reported on 30 July that Luton’s bid for Palmer was higher than the £2.5-3million that had been reported elsewhere and that the bid was a cash up-front offer rather than payments in multiple instalments as is the case with most bids.
With less than a week to go before the Championship season kicks off, a spanner in the works may cause issues for both clubs, with preparations needing to be focused, with any transfer rumours likely causing a distraction.
The bid from Luton had already caused issues with Carlos Corberan’s preparations, as he revealed Palmer was very much a part of his plans for the new season until the bid came in, with things now seemingly up in the air.
