Trent Alexander-Arnold is set become Liverpool’s third highest-paid player despite an abject start to the season before injury.
The right-back for England has missed six matches for club and country as a result of a hamstring injury sustained in the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the beginning of September.
The academy product is a world-class forward prospect, but this season and last, as Jurgen Klopp began to experiment with him in a dual role between defense and midfield, he was responsible for a number of goals surrendered.
However, it didn’t stop Liverpool from signing their player to a longer-term contract. The current agreement with Alexander-Arnold is valid until June 2025.
According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold have reached an agreement in principle on a new contract for more than £55 million.
New deal ‘signed off soon’
The new package will see Alexander-Arnold earning more than £200,000 per-week plus bonuses and is expected to be signed off soon.
Alexander-Arnold’s new contract would represent a 10% increase over his current one, tying him with Thiago Alcantara for the third-highest salary at the club, behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
Trent has an internal value of €63.7 million, although his highest xTV was €103.5 million the summer before last.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been linked with a bid for the star in the past, although the former are unlikely to be able to afford him given their dismal financial situations.
Alexander-Arnold finds himself in the rare situation of being sought by some of the top teams in Europe yet trailing Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, and Reece James in Gareth Southgate’s England right-back hierarchy.
They too have used him in midfield, and he scored from the position when they beat Malta 4-0 in Euro 2024
