Despite Trey Nyoni’s promising start, Liverpool reportedly resisted interest from “every top club” in the young midfielder.
Nyoni, 16, joined Amara Nallo, 16, from West Ham, and Harvey Owen, 14, from Wolves as one of three young players that moved to Liverpool during the summer from Leicester.
Following the UK’s exit from the EU, it keeps putting an emphasis on signing the finest players from teams around England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
The first of these to arrive was Calum Scanlon, who was followed, among others, by Ben Doak, Kaide Gordon, Bobby Clark, and Trent Kone-Doherty.
The results of this strategy are evident, and other teams are also changing their stances. According to Gregg Evans of The Athletic, Nyoni is being “tracked by every top club.”
Similar to Nallo, who started off with the U18s but quickly advanced to the U21s, Nyoni has adapted well to life at his new club.
The young player has so far scored three goals and provided two assists in four official games for the U18s. He has also made two appearances off the bench for the U21s.
In his debut game at the AXA Training Center, a 10-0 friendly victory over Southend U18s, he also scored three goals, including a hat-trick.
Nyoni will likely moderate expectations for his development, but it is obvious that Liverpool has acquired a midfielder with enormous potential.
The 16-year-old’s degree of attention is not surprising given that he now plays for the England U17 team and made his debut for the Leicester U21s before moving to Merseyside.
His decision to sign with the Reds above any other club further confirmed their perception that they are seen as a “destination” for young talent, according to Evans.
