Liverpool player received an additional one-match ban and a £100,000 fine for ‘abusive words’ to referee during a win against Newcastle.

Virgil van Dijk has been handed an extra one-match ban and given a £100,000 fine by the Football Association.

The Liverpool defender was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association following his red card against Newcastle.

Due to a one-match suspension, the Dutch star already missed the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Aston Villa last weekend.

He will now, however, skip the Saturday, September 16 trip to Wolves.

“The defender confirmed that he acted improperly and used abusive and offensive language against a match official after being dismissed in the 29th minute,” the FA said in a statement. “Thereafter, the punishments were applied by an independent regulatory panel.

“Full written justifications for this case will be made public as soon as possible.”
