In order to overcome an early disadvantage against the Championship leaders at Anfield, the Netherlands internationals teamed up.
In the third round of the Carabao Cup, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo of the international team’s collaborated for a critical Liverpool goal as the Reds overcame Leicester City after falling behind. Early in the second half, Gakpo scored the equalizer, and the Reds went on to win 3-1 with ease thanks to a powerful strike from Dominik Szoboszlai and a delicate flick from Diogo Jota.
After a well-executed counter, Kasey McAteer finished past Caoimhin Kelleher in the third minute, continuing a recent pattern for Liverpool of giving up early. Ben Doak struck the woodwork for the Reds, Gakpo had a shot deflected off the line by Conor Coady, Jota wasted an opportunity from two yards out with the goal gaping, and Gakpo had a header cleverly stopped by Jakub Stolarczyk.
Eventually, the Reds managed to draw even, thanks to Gravenberch’s assist for Gakpo, who quickly after halftime made a pivot and scored the equalizer. A few minutes later, Gakpo could have added a second goal, but his lofted header struck the crossbar instead.
Szoboszlai came off the bench to eventually turn the tie around, lashing a shot in off the bar from 25 yards out. And Jota sealed things, directing Jarell Quansah’s cross into the far corner with a clever backheel.
keeper and defense
(6) Caoimhin Kelleher
Couldn’t really change McAteer’s intention. Otherwise, I was a spectator.
6.6/10 for Curtis Jones
did a good job playing the inverted full-back while in possession, but Leicester’s quick breaks highlighted his defensive flaws.
(7/10) Ibrahima Konate
covered a lot for Jones and kept things moving in the background. a responsible performance.
8/10 for Jarell Quansah
Although he should have been closer to his man when Leicester scored, he still made some crucial stops and distributed the ball well. A encouraging performance from the youngster, who has so far made an impression.
(7/10) Kostas Tsimikas
Even though he thought he had been fouled, he was caught out just before Leicester’s opening goal. After that, it significantly improved and became risky in developed places.
Midfield
(5.0/10) Harvey Elliott
brightly at first, but then faded. He is still not certain to be a winger or a midfielder.
(6) Wataru Endo
covered a lot of territory, made some tackles, and scored some headers. Wasn’t always very organized or on point, though.
(8/10) Ryan Gravenberch
He was a genuine menace in the last third, and some of his marauding runs were fantastic. Gakpo was helped after a magnificent display of expertise. was taken out of the game and appeared exhausted.
Attack
6/10 for Ben Doak
offered wing speed and deception, but his finished product was missing. He is an intriguing prospect, but he needs time.
8/10 for Cody Gakpo
incisively finished to score the equalizer. maybe two more should have been included. finished the game in the middle of the field, where he appeared more than at ease.
Jota (7/10) Diogo
In the first half, there should have been a goal. On the break, his vigor and directness created issues. An outstanding backheel made the outcome exclamation point-worthy.
