Liverpool news: Darwin Nunez sends message as Ibrahima Konate hints at injury return
While center-back Ibrahima Konate continues to recuperate from a hamstring injury, Darwin Nunez is having a solid start to the new season for both club and country.
Liverpool’s top players are away on international duty this weekend while the Premier League is off.
Following their rout of Aston Villa at home last Sunday, the Reds stand third in the table with 10 points after four games. They are still unbeaten and eager to put last season’s disastrous campaign behind them. The Europa League is approaching, but for now, manager Jurgen Klopp is assessing the situation as his players serve their nations. The Liverpool manager has also traveled back home.
Klopp returns with emotion
Taking advantage of a gap in Premier League play, Jurgen Klopp visited his native Germany. Klopp, who also spent the majority of his playing career there, returned to the place where it all began for him as a manager.
The Liverpool manager was introduced to the crowd on Saturday before the Bundesliga team’s friendly match against Duisberg at the Bruchwegstadion. The game was planned as a goodbye celebration for the stadium’s renowned Sudtribune stand, which will be torn down the following year. Mainz referred to Klopp’s presence as a “flying visit,” and he was sporting a t-shirt that read “South Bank, steps full of history” in German and English.
Nunez shines in Uruguay win
Darwin Nunez continued his productive run of form by notching two assists for Uruguay during Friday’s 3-1 victory over Chile in World Cup qualifying. Inheriting the No.9 shirt from former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, Nunez set up both of Nicolas de la Cruz’s goals to send yet another message to his critics.
The 24-year-old made the most dribbles in the game with three and added six other shots to his arsenal. Nunez is currently working for renowned manager Marcelo Bielsa at the international level and has been communicating with the former Leeds boss via video chat in an effort to elevate his performance. “Some things he thinks can be better,” Nunez said last month. He corrects me, I say.
Konate gives a return signal
Ibrahima Konate is getting closer to making a full recovery after missing France’s games this month owing to an ongoing hamstring problem. The 24-year-old center defender visited Paris while traveling home during the break.
Konate hinted at a potential return to action on Instagram by posting a quick video of himself going for a run. Following Didier Deschamps’ admission that Konate was “insufficiently recovered” to be available, the former RB Leipzig star was replaced not the France team by Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo. Konate had joined Liverpool in a £36 million transfer deal two years prior.
