Liverpool might persuade Bayer Leverkusen to trade Piero Hincapie only if…

The Reds have today been named as the most likely side to follow up on interest in Hincapie in the remainder of the summer window.

With Jurgen Klopp in the market for a left-footed centre-back, the Ecuadorian could fit the bill. However, according to Sport BILD, it will take an ‘immoral’ offer to get Leverkusen to the table.

Piero Hincapie

The German outlet claim that Xabi Alonso’s team are currently expecting Hincapie to stay util next year. Having recently signed a new deal until 2027, he’s said to be an undisputed starter for the former Liverpool midfielder.

That being said, it’s claimed that a huge bid could tempt Leverkusen to change their position. A proposal in the region of £60m will reportedly be needed, though.

Leverkusen name Hincapie price

As things stand, there’s absolutely no way that Liverpool would be willing to offer anything like £60m for Hincapie.

He looks like a good young defender, one who was called ‘exciting’ by Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes upon signing in 2021 [bundesliga.com]. But he’s still relatively unproven at the very top level.

With a current injury to also bear in mind, there’s just no chance that the Reds would put out such an enormous fee.

Piero Hincapie

And to be honest, nor should they. Leverkusen are well within their rights to slap a big price-tag on a key player, but Liverpool won’t take that bait.

Instead, the wiser choice would probably be to sit back and continue keeping tabs on Hincapie for a further season.

If he excels in 23/24, Liverpool will be able to make more of a case for spending £60m on him. With a full summer to negotiate, they’d likely be able to get that price down, too.

Or, if the Ecuador international fails to kick on, then the Reds will go down another route. Some may wish Liverpool to buy someone, anyone, to help at the back right now, but Liverpool won’t do anything foolish.
