Liverpool interested in Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil?

Liverpool are allegedly interested in signing Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil before the summer transfer market closes.

Since graduating from the club’s academy in June 2018, the 21-year-old has been a regular starter for the Black Cats, leading them gain promotion to the Championship.

On their return to the EFL’s top flight, Tony Mowbray’s men finished inside the top six of the second tier, with Neil appearing in all but one of their league games.

So far, the midfielder has played every minute of the Black Cats’ current Championship campaign, scoring once and assisting once in four outings.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool is looking into signing Neil from Sunderland in the last days of the transfer season.

According to the report, the Reds have been keeping an eye on the player’s development over the last several seasons, with the former England Under-20 international impressing at the North-East club.

Jurgen Klopp is said to see Neil as someone who might fill the vacuum left by departing club captain Jordan Henderson in the 2023-24 season.

After moving to Anfield from the Stadium of Light in June 2011, England international Henderson left Merseyside to join Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq.

Klopp’s side have also lost defensive midfielder Fabinho to the Middle East this summer, implying that the Reds have been looking to dramatically strengthen their engine room.

Liverpool are still interested in signing Sunderland’s Neil, despite a deal for Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch being close to completion.

The Reds and the Bundesliga winners are thought to have agreed a deal of £34.2 million for the Dutch international to join them in the Premier League.

Despite being predicted for a bright career in Germany, the 21-year-old moved to the Allianz Arena from Ajax last summer but has battled for consistent game time at the Bavarian giants.

Gravenberch would be Liverpool’s third signing from the Bundesliga this summer, following the arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo from RB Leipzig and Stuttgart, respectively.

Neil, a Sunderland midfielder, has never played above the Championship level, but Klopp is reported to see him as someone who may develop into a vital role for the Anfield club.
