On Wednesday morning in Montevideo, Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-0, with Darwin Nuñez being the main player of the match.
As Uruguay transitions from the era of superstars Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani to a new one, there has been a lot of pressure on Liverpool’s new number nine to lead the front line.
Nuñez delivered an outstanding performance at the Estadio Centenario on Wednesday, following his stoppage-time penalty last week that secured a draw away at Colombia.
The former Benfica player was named man of the match for his efforts against Brazil. He first scored the goal with a brilliant header over Ederson and then set up Nicolas de la Cruz for the game-winning goal in the second half.
Not only does Uruguay’s victory move them up to second place in the World Cup 2026 qualifying standings, but it also remarkably represents the nation’s first triumph against its neighbors since 2001.
After the match, Nuñez expressed his satisfaction in the historic victory.
We have been discussing this match since Colombia. It was a straight, formidable opponent. Everyone’s effort was worthwhile, he declared.
We executed a fantastic offensive and defensive performance in the match. We prevailed today. We haven’t defeated Brazil in 22 years; they are undoubtedly a formidable team. Let’s celebrate our historic achievement and head back to our clubs.
Even more worrisome for Liverpool, Nuñez disclosed that he experienced cramps near the conclusion of a fierce match.
The truth is that I have to work and not settle for anything to earn the position of number nine, and that’s what I try to do when I come to the national team,” he continued. I come here to leave everything on the field, and today I made that clear. In the end, I felt a little constricted. I’m pleased with the outcome.”
It is unclear if Nuñez will be well enough to play in this weekend’s Merseyside derby.
It is unlikely that the forward will have much time to practice before the Saturday, 12:30 BST kickoff. But, Jurgen Klopp may have fewer alternatives when it comes to attacking because Cody Gakpo is doubtful due to an injury.
