Leeds United’s right-back problem is going to be solved, as the club is close to signing Djed Spence.
This move has not yet been medically cleared, but an announcement is expected within the next 48 hours.
At Leeds, the ‘unbelievable’ defender is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Indeed, the Whites have struggled at right-back this season.
Luke Ayling, as much as fans love him, has been poor defensively so far this season, while Cody Drameh really hasn’t taken to life under Daniel Farke as many expected him to.
Spence would be a brilliant addition to this side, and he should suit Farke’s system to a tee.
Farke’s full-backs are generally allowed leeway to move up and down the flank, as we saw with Max Aarons at Norwich, and that style should suit Spence, who has often done his finest work as a wing-back rather than a full-back.
This maneuver needs to be described as a coup. Spence was fantastic in the Championship with Nottingham Forest last season, which is why Tottenham paid £15 million for his services, and it’s surprising to see the defender drop back down to this level after proven himself to be too good for this division the last time around.
Of course, Spence will not be the only Spurs loanee at Leeds if this transaction is completed. Joe Rodon will be right alongside him at centre-half, and while they haven’t actually played together for Spurs, they should have some sort of a bond from their little time together in north London.
Leeds should be busy over the next few days, and it appears like Spence will be the next to arrive.
