Karl Darlow completed his move to Leeds United from Newcastle United on the weekend and was even among the subs as the Whites beat Hearts on Sunday – a move which prompted a touching message from Martin Dubravka.

Darlow, 32, ends a nine-year stint at Newcastle in which he clocked up 100 appearances – playing largely as the club’s back-up option. But, he played a crucial part in Rafa Benitez’s side regaining a place in the Premier League.

Last season, he was loaned to Hull City in January – after falling down the pecking order on Tyneside. He impressed, keeping five clean sheets in 12 games – conceding 14. Loris Karius has signed a new contract at St. James’ Park.

Nick Pope remains first choice, while Mark Gillespie and Dubravka remain on Tyneside. The Toon are set to be a part of next season’s Champions League, and £4m Dubravka is likely to play back-up to Pope. Darlow has decided to go.

He has signed a contract until June 2026 at Elland Road, which is likely to prompt the exit of Illan Meslier in the next few days, or weeks. Following his exit, Dubravka responded to his move with a heartfelt post directed to Darlow.

It now opens up an intriguing situation at Leeds. Meslier has been expected to go, but he remains between the sticks and on Sunday – he kept a clean sheet against Hearts. His second in two games, after a 2-0 win over Forest.

So, what happens now? With no more games until the opener against Cardiff on August 6, Daniel Farke has got to make a decision. Either bring Darlow in against the Bluebirds, or continue with Meslier. Surely, we will now cash in.
