Maximilian Wober is the latest Leeds United player who could leave the club following their relegation due to a loan clause in the contract he agreed in January, reports claim.
Wober joined Leeds from Red Bull Salzburg in January, reuniting him with Jesse Marsch. Their paths did not cross for long, though, because the manager was fired the following month. Leeds were relegated by the end of the season when neither Javi Gracia nor Sam Allardyce could stop their slide down the table.
As a result, several players have already left the Leeds squad. Several players’ contracts included stipulations that allowed them to leave on loan if the club was relegated.
Robin Koch, for example, has joined Eintracht Frankfurt, Diego Llorente has returned to Roma (together with Rasmus Kristensen), Brody Aaronson has joined Union Berlin, and Marc Roca has joined Real Betis.
Wober could possibly quit Leeds after only 19 appearances in half a season, according to numerous publications in Germany.Meczyki claims that the 25-year-old has emerged as a target for Borussia Monchengladbach, who may sell Nico Elvedi to Wolves.
In such situation, they’d have to find a replacement at center-back. They have switched their attention to Wober due to the relative easiness of the operation.
According to Fussball Transfers and the German version of Sky Sports, Wober might join Gladbach if Elvedi leaves.
Wober was not in the Leeds squad for their friendly loss to Monaco on Saturday. It might have been an indication that his future could lie elsewhere.
Indeed, after the match, Daniel Farke confirmed: “Yes, it has to do with the transfer situation and also the contract situation.
“We will await what the outcome is over the next days, but that’s the reason he wasn’t involved today.
Wober on shortlist of Farke’s former club
For the time being, Gladbach – who just so happen to be Farke’s former club – are mulling over a couple of other options in addition to Wober.
Both Fussball Transfers and Sky name Jordan Torunarigha from Gent as a player under consideration. The first source also puts Felix Uduokhai from Augsburg into the equation.
However, some form of negotiations seem to be underway with Wober, who can play as a centre-half or left-back.
Wober is due to be under contract at Elland Road until 2027. However, it appears he may have an escape route available to him in the coming weeks.
Elvedi, meanwhile, may be set for his first taste of Premier League football after eight campaigns in the Bundesliga.
Wolves managed to retain top-flight status last season after Julen Lopetegui steadied the ship. There have been rumours of them losing Max Kilman from their defence this summer, which may be why they are planning their own defensive investment.
