Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto scored on his return to the side against Ipswich after his drawn-out transfer saga and celebrated by shushing the home fans, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist shared via his Twitter account that the Leeds forward was wise in keeping low-key as he returned to the side in the 4-2 win at Portman Road on Saturday 26 August.
Gnonto had previously been refusing to play for the Yorkshire side as he looked to force through a move away from the club but has returned to the lineup after apologising to Daniel Farke.
Nice little celebration from Gnonto with a ‘shush’ towards the home fans. He kept it low key when he came out, which was a good idea. Just knuckled
The first step towards redemption
This will be a good first step towards repairing his relationship with his manager, club and fans after the way he had behaved throughout this summer’s transfer window saw pockets of fans turn against him with banners and chants during the game v Birmingham.
Regardless of his behaviour in this transfer window, and reparations will need to be made as fans do not forget easily, it will still be understood that the Italian is one of Leeds’ best players, and is probably too good for the level they find themselves playing at.
His role in the side will be crucial for the club as they look to earn promotion at the first time of asking, with his impact on the team and ability to drag the team’s performances with him likely to be the difference in tight games.
There had been concerns about the depth of the Leeds squad in the absence of Gnonto and teammate Luis Sinisterra, so their returns to the team will be a very welcome bonus, with the rewards already being reaped for his efforts.
