Ipswich Town vs. Hull City preview: picks, lineups, and team news

Ipswich Town and Hull City will square off at Portman Road on Tuesday night. Both teams are positioned inside the top six of the Championship. Both teams went undefeated in September, and after 1-1 ties over the weekend, the two teams are separated in the rankings by six points.

Match preview

Ipswich attempted to add to their 4-3 Championship victory over Blackburn Rovers and Tuesday’s EFL Cup comeback against Wolves as they traveled north to Huddersfield on Saturday after earning all three points in their last four league games and pulling off a midweek cup victory.

However, Kieran McKenna’s team was relieved to receive one point after substitute Brandon Williams secured a late equalizer at the John Smith’s Stadium for Huddersfield Town, who are now playing under new manager Darren Moore.

Ipswich has successfully adjusted to life in the Championship after finally winning promotion from League One last season, and their only loss thus far was an eventful 4-3 defeat to Leeds United back in August. As a result, they are currently second in the table, just two points behind leaders Leicester City.

The Tractor Boys have scored at least twice in each of their previous 14 league games at Portman Road, including that seven-goal thriller. They have won 12 times and scored 49 goals, averaging 3.5 per game.

Strangely, Ipswich hasn’t lost in any of its 17 league games during the week since December 2021, so history is undoubtedly on their favour as of Tuesday night.

Hull City may draw encouragement from the past as well, since the Tigers haven’t lost back-to-back league games to Ipswich in about 64 years, despite being defeated 2-1 in the teams’ most recent meeting in 2021.

In addition, Hull has won each of their past six league matches at Portman Road while giving up just one goal, a record streak that spans from 2011 to 2020.

The East Yorkshire team, led by head coach Liam Rosenior, is now in good enough shape to threaten one of the Championship’s early pacesetters. Their lengthy undefeated streak was maintained with a 1-1 home draw against Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

Regan Slater scored again just before halftime to even the score and extend Hull’s streak of victories to eight. Hull is now sixth in the standings with 16 points after nine games.

Ipswich performs admirably at home, but City is now in Suffolk having won each of their past three away games and looking to win four straight for the first time in more than ten years. Hull last accomplished this feat in late 2012, and Rosenior participated in three of those games.
