A few weeks before the 2024 NFL Draft, cornerback Gemon Green is supposedly signed by the Green Bay Packers.
On Wednesday, April 10, SI.com’s Bill Huber revealed that Green had signed with the Packers.
Huber added, “A source claims that Green was just cleared following shoulder surgery. He worked out in Green Bay for the first time since getting well, and he clearly performed well enough to warrant a closer examination.
Although it’s hardly a big signing, the Packers haven’t made a big move since bringing in veteran kicker Greg Joseph to face Anders Carlson in training camp.
While all eyes in the Packers community are focused on the impending draft, general manager Brian Gutekunst is still making moves in the background.
Gemon Green: Who Is He?
At the NFL level, Green isn’t a household name, but college football fans might be familiar with the moniker.
In 2018, Green, a DeSoto, Texas native, was rated as a three-star high school prospect. Numerous scholarship offers were made to him, some from prestigious universities in Oregon, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Green made the decision to play for the Michigan Wolverines in the Midwest instead. Even though it took him some time to break into the starting lineup, he persevered and didn’t transfer, which paid off toward the end of his college career.
Green was a special teams player as a sophomore after seeing no action as a true freshman. As a junior in 2020, he established himself as the starting cornerback. By the time he turned pro in 2020, he had made 24 career starts and was named an honorable mention to the All-Big Ten team in 2022.
Having missed out on a national championship, Green announced his candidacy for the 2023 NFL Draft. At 6’1″ and 183 pounds, he was a substantial size, and his moderate 6.64 out of 10 Relative Athletic Score (RAS) was also noted.
Green signed with the New York Giants as a UDFA after ultimately going undrafted. He was signed by no other team until the Packers brought him in ahead of the 2024 draft, and he was not selected for the final 53-man roster.
At Packers training camp, Green will now have the chance to push for a reserve or special teams spot.
A Cornerback Could Be Selected by the Packers
Although it might not be Green Bay’s top need, Gutekunst might still think about selecting a cornerback early in the draft.
In 2024, Jaire Alexander hopes to get back to All-Pro form, while Carrington Valentine and Eric Stokes are the front-runners for the position of opposite outside cornerback. Resigned to maintain the slot role was Keisean Nixon.
Even so, the Packers might benefit from some outside competition, particularly if they are unable to re-sign Stokes by 2025. Even inviting Kool-Aid McKinstry, an Alabama prospect, for a top-30 visit suggests that the team is doing a lot of research on him.
The Packers may be considering other cornerbacks besides McKinstry. Two other cornerbacks who have been brought in on top-30 visits are Maryland’s Ja’Quan Sheppard and Florida State’s Jarrian Jones.
Green was added before the draft. However, don’t believe it will deter the Packers from upgrading in order to contend for a starting position in the draft this year.
