It appears that the man who was shot dead on a rural Alabama road and whose bullet-riddled body was discovered there was a hitman after a former Green Bay Packers star was shot to death.

The death of Centre Point resident Darryl Thomas, 21, a father of two, seems to be retaliation for the death of former Packers defensive lineman Carlos Grey, according to a statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

The day after Gray’s death was discovered in his home, also close to Birmingham, Thomas’s body was discovered on a road.

Crime scene: After receiving a 911 call from Gray’s girlfriend, deputies were dispatched to his residence on Balboa Terrace, close to Birmingham.

Four suspects were detained after Thomas was killed, and at least one of them was thought to have been a close friend of Gray’s, according to investigators. No charges were immediately brought in relation to either death.

On Monday night, just before ten o’clock at night, Grey was found unconscious on Balboa Terrace, close to Birmingham.

Al.com states that after Gray’s girlfriend discovered him critically injured, sheriff’s deputies and Centre Point Fire and Rescue were called to the residence.

When she left the residence an hour ago, the woman said deputies she had last seen Grey alive.

During the process of searching the crime scene, investigators allegedly found digital scales, marijuana, and a Glock handgun with an extended magazine as well as an AK-47 rifle with a big capacity magazine.

Authorities say that deputies got a call about a possible kidnapping at a convenience store early the following morning. An unidentified individual reported to the police that he and Thomas had been kidnapped at gunpoint by five persons driving two automobiles.

With a young son and daughter, Thomas wrote on Facebook on April 30, expressing shock at hearing about Gray’s passing and expressing his condolences for the former NFL player, whom he described as a buddy.

After playing for North Carolina State University, Grey became a free agent in 2014 and agreed to a three-year, $1.5 million contract with the Packers.

He was cut loose by the Packers in 2015, according to Al.com, and went back to his native Alabama, where he made a new career out of partying, property flipping, and vehicle sales. He was the father of a girl and a boy who were both small children.

In her Facebook condolences, Gray’s aunt described the 300-pound athlete as “really a gentle giant with a large heart.”

Grey last year entered a guilty plea to a charge of possessing marijuana, which led police to believe that drugs had a role in his death.

The four individuals who were taken into custody on Tuesday in relation to the death of Thomas are accused of both capital murder and kidnapping.
