Women’s Super League: Liverpool vs. Everton.

In the opening Merseyside Derby of the Barclays Women’s Super League 2018/19 season, Liverpool will visit Everton on Sunday. Since the Reds haven’t defeated the Toffees in more than four years, it begs the question: will this be the much-needed win? Thankfully, there are grounds for believing that.

After winning their first two games of the season, Liverpool will come into the game on Sunday in outstanding WSL form.

The team that makes the most of its opportunities in the opposition half and stands strong in the face of aggressive presses is evident from the stat sheets.

Liverpool defeated Arsenal 1-0 in a gruelling match that saw the Gunners hold 61% of the possession, attempt count, and corner count rise to 19.

Still, the Reds were victorious because of their tactical skill and remarkable resilience in the defensive half.

Aston Villa had 58% of the ball for much of the second Women’s Super League match between the Reds and them, but Liverpool’s swift counterattacks and far superior chance-making allowed them to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Reds lost their FA Women’s League Cup midweek match against Leicester City, but Matt Beard made seven changes to the starting lineup to give certain players rest while giving others much-needed experience.

This plan will guarantee that the Liverpool team takes the pitch on Sunday well-rested.

Everton will be coming off three straight losses, two in the WSL and one in the League Cup, going into the game.

The Toffees have been competitive in every game, though, so they should be much more motivated to play in a Derby.

Anticipate a hard-fought encounter in which Everton will control the bulk of the ball and Liverpool will withstand onslaught while seizing chances to counterattack.

It promises to be an exciting event that accentuates one of the major rivalries within the Women’s Super League.
