Joe Anderson has targeted Everton fans in his tribute to Bill Kenwright on the announcement of his death.
The former Mayor of Liverpool said the poisonous cancer of so-called fans personally assaulting him hurt him the most and broke his heart after the Toffees disclosed the chairman had died, aged 78, in a statement on their website on Tuesday (24 October).
He went on to say that Kenwright’s passion and loyalty were indisputable, and that he deserved better than the way he was treated at Goodison Park.
This tweet is in poor taste and utterly unneeded at this time, coming from someone who should know better given his former high-profile role in Liverpool.
The connection between fans and the board in general has deteriorated in recent years, but nearly everyone linked with Everton will mourn his death this evening.
He has been a big presence at the club for several decades, serving as the club’s longest-serving chairman in more than a century.
Anderson has no business taking cheap shots at the fans as a whole during this difficult time for the Blues.
Over the next few days, there will be an outpouring of sympathy from the footballing world, and Kenwright will most likely get a spectacular homage from the fans at Goodison Park.
