Ashley Young has been chastised by Mike Dean for putting himself in trouble so early in the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool.
Following the international break, Sean Dyche’s team returned to action on Saturday (21 October) with a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, with Mohammed Salah netting twice to ensure the Toffees were unable to make it back-to-back Premier League wins.
Everton were reduced to ten men in the last minutes of the first half after Young was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Luis Diaz, and former referee Mike Dean was quick to criticize the former England international for his error.
He remarked on Sky Sports (21 October, 13:12): “He’s put himself in trouble again, getting cautioned so early on and with the challenge being right in the corner of the penalty area.”Diaz is astute to have found him, but it’s a challenge he probably didn’t have to issue.
Young’s tenure at Goodison Park has been a disaster so far, with a number of incidents displaying a level of naivety and a lack of care that Everton fans would not have expected from such an experienced player.
He gave Unai Emery’s side a goal earlier this season against Aston Villa, and before the international break against Luton Town, he failed to clear his lines, ensuring the Hatters’ first-ever Premier League win over the Toffees.
His dismissal at Anfield exemplified his problem at Goodison, as he was unable to keep up with the lightning-quick Diaz, who eventually got the best of him twice, earning him two yellow cards early in the game.
The rest of the game was a true test for Everton as they struggled against a quality Liverpool side with one fewer man, but you have to question how many more errors Young will be allowed to make before Dyche decides to drop him from the starting XI.
