Great Opportunity: in the Merseyside derby, Everton must capitalize. Update on Curtis Jones

Everton is aware that they will be underdogs in the first Merseyside derby of the season, but a recent update from Liverpool on Tuesday (3 October) gives them a chance to seize.

The Reds lost to Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday (30 September) in a disputed game in which they had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside following a VAR assessment and finished the game with nine men.

After 26 minutes, Curtis Jones was given a straight red card for an excessive challenge on Yves Bissouma. Liverpool filed an appeal, but it was unsuccessful, the club stated on Twitter.

After his appeal to have his Saturday red card against Tottenham Hotspur overturned was denied, Curtis Jones is now expected to serve a three-game Premier League suspension.

Jones will, as a result, miss this weekend’s game against Brighton as well as the Liverpool derby against Everton on October 21 following the international break. He’ll play against Nottingham Forest as well.

Of course, Everton has its own problems to deal with, but Liverpool does have some midfield issues. While there is optimism that Cody Gakpo’s condition is not as serious as initially feared, it is still unclear whether he will be available for the game after injuring himself while attempting to score their goal in the 2-1 loss to Spurs.

Thiago Alcantara has still yet to feature this season due to a hip injury, while Stefan Bajetic remains on the sidelines too.

It will require a full-blooded effort from the Toffees to walk away from Anfield with all three points and their immediate concern will be defeating Bournemouth this Saturday (7 October) to end a run of four straight home defeats to start the Premier League this season.

But there is an opportunity to be pounced on and Sean Dyche will be very aware of that fact.
