JONJOE KENNY ON EVERTON AFFECTION, COLEMAN SUPPORT, AND LIFE IN BERLIN (BRED A BLUE)
Our latest Bred a Blue podcast series features a boyhood Toffee whose football journey thus far has taken him from Kirkdale to Berlin, with several outposts in between!
Jonjoe Kenny made 69 appearances for the senior Everton team after progressing through every age group in the Academy. He left in 2022 to play in the Bundesliga for Hertha Berlin.
He struggled to unseat Seamus Coleman at Goodison, spending time on loan at Wigan Athletic, Oxford United FC Schalke 04, and Celtic.
He discusses his adjustment to life in Germany, his goal of learning enough German to enjoy a night out with his Hertha teammates, and the distinctions between the Bundesliga and the Premier League in this episode of Bred a Blue.
In addition, he reflects on his time at Everton, from his initial scouting days to his Goodison Park debut in 2016 as a replacement for Matty Pennington.
At the time, he was hesitant to accept a trial offer because his Sunday team had a crucial match.
Along with reliving some of his career’s greatest moments, Jonjoe also remembers winning the 2017 Under-20 World Cup with England, playing for Oxford United at Wembley, and, of course, participating in that amazing, unforgettable Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Goodison in May 2022.
Although, to be fair, playing somewhere new during the “empty-stadium” Covid lockdown period was always going to be challenging, Jonjoe acknowledges that his experience at Celtic did not go well.
In addition, he admits that he was never really thought of as an Everton regular and claims that his most motivating teammate was Seamus Coleman, his rival at right-back.
