Everton approached Juventus earlier this summer with an inquiry over the availability of defender Koni De Winter, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The newspaper reported on their website (2 August) that the Serie A giants had placed an £8.6million valuation on the 21-year-old centre-back amid interest from “hosts” of other European clubs.
The Belgian youth regular spent last season on loan with Italian side Empoli, but is yet to make a senior appearance for his current club.
Risky move
While De Winter is yet to have a prolonged stint at a senior club, his profile and ability could make him an astute signing by Everton.
While primarily a centre-back, his versatility allows him to fill in at full-back and in midfield, meaning he could make good injury cover across a wide range of positions.
He has garnered a lot of interest from other clubs, including Genoa and Udinese [Calciomercato], so the Toffees may have to push for his signature. However, the prospect of playing in the Premier League compared to remaining in Serie A puts Everton in a position of great advantage.
However, a move for him could just as easily be a risk. His lack of senior football should be a concern. If Everton want to significantly improve on their poor league season, perhaps more reliable and proven players should be brought in.
While his stats are dim viewing for Everton fans currently, his lack of game time makes judging him on these metrics unfair, but watching De Winter could provide insight into his style of play.
He is very comfortable on the ball and remains calm inter pressure. While facing oncoming attacks, he is adept at tracking his man and nullifying potential threats. At just 21 years of age, he is very assured, but he remains a gamble.
A risk could pay off massively for Everton, but the Toffees may not be in a position at the moment to take such risks.
