Wolverhampton Wanderers news from BirminghamLive as Gary O’Neil settles in as the new manager
Wolves will bring in Crystal Palace coach Shaun Derry as part of Gary O’Neil’s new management team, according to a report.
The 45-year-old former Notts County and Cambridge United manager has been part of the Palace staff for four years, over two spells, having also represented the club as a player. He played for the Eagles for six years and won promotion with them.
He joined the Palace coaching staff in 2019, initially as part of the academy before he was promoted to the first team staff under then manager Patrick Vieira. He lost his job early this year after falling out of favour with Vieira but rejoined them this summer to be part of Roy Hodgson’s staff at Selhurst Park.
Now the Mail reports he is to join O’Neil at Wolves as the new manager gets his plans together following his appointment on Wednesday, signing a three-year deal as successor to Julen Lopetegui.
West Ham’s Mark Robson and Bournemouth’s Tim Jenkins are also wanted to be part of O’Neil’s backroom team as the new boss prepares for a Premier League season that kicks off for Wolves with Monday’s game at Manchester United.
Wolves opted for O’Neil as their new manager having been impressed with the job he did at Bournemouth in his first managerial role. The 40 year old was appointed as caretaker boss last August, taking over a side that had lost three of their first four games and just been beaten 9-0 by Liverpool.
He led the Cherries to safety and a 16th-placed finish but lost his job in June because Bournemouth’s new owners wanted to bring in Andoni Iraola as manager.
