Carlos Alcaraz says he will be prepared for Indian Wells after pulling out of the Rio Open.

The world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz is certain he will be ready for his Indian Wells championship defense in March, even if he sprained his ankle at the Rio Open on Tuesday. Alcaraz was forced to quit the Rio Open after just two games against Thiago Monteiro.

Carlos Alcaraz, ranked second in the world, is expecting to recover from an ankle injury sustained at the Rio Open in time to defend his Indian Wells title in March.

Alcaraz withdrew from his Tuesday match against Thiago Monteiro after just two games. A sprained ankle was discovered on scans, but the 20-year-old is hopeful about recovering quickly.

The two-time Grand Slam winner is slated to play fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in an exhibition match in Las Vegas on March 3 before heading to Indian Wells later in the month.

“I just had an MRI on my ankle after yesterday’s injury,” Alcaraz wrote in a post on Instagram.

“After seeing each other, my doctor and physiotherapist determined that I had a grade II lateral sprain. I sprained my ankle, so I’ll be gone for a few days! I hope to see you in Las Vegas and Indian Wells.

Following the match, Alcaraz released the following statement: “I got hurt when I changed directions; these things happen, much more so on clay.” The court wasn’t the problem. On this kind of surface, it happens.

“I went back to the game to check whether I could make it through. The on-court physio and I decided after our conversation that I should keep trying to see if this gets better.
