The former coach and player for Quinnipiac University has been named the first general manager of the Boston PWHL team.
Danielle Marmer, a former forward at Quinnipiac, scored 15 points throughout her four years with the Bobcats.
The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced on Friday that Danielle Marmer, a former coach and player at Quinnipiac, has been chosen the league’s first general manager in the history of the Boston club.
Marmer was the director of hockey operations and player development for three seasons after participating in four seasons of ice hockey for Quinnipiac University women’s ice hockey from 2013 to 2017.
In a video posted on the team’s social media pages, Marmer declared, “I know that Boston sports fans are the finest in the world since I grew up in New England.” “I’m dedicated to creating a team that this community will be pleased with. If we play our part, maybe you’ll cheer us on with the same fervour and excitement as you do for the Bruins, Celtics, Pats, and Sox.
She is one of the six founding general managers of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), which was established on June 30 following the dissolution of the Premier Hockey Federation and the signing of a collective bargaining agreement with the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association.
PWHL executive vice president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford stated in a news statement on Friday that “securing highly qualified General Managers was a priority to help construct strong foundations in each of our first six PWHL cities and ensuring professional standards for all players.” “After a thorough investigation, we were able to compile an outstanding collection of individuals who have together played at the greatest levels of the sport, both on and off the ice.”
Marmer, a native of Vermont, worked as the Boston Bruins’ player development and scouting assistant for the previous season.
At a news conference on Friday, Marmer stated, “I’m a product of the mentors that I’ve worked for, the organisations that I’ve been a member of.” “Jim Montgomery of the Boston Bruins said it extremely well when he said that courage and hockey sense are essential for playing at the greatest level. I want to carry it with me when I consider assembling this club.”
The Bruins left an equally lasting impact on Marmer, as team members thanked her on social media on Friday for her time with the organisation.
The Bruins’ general manager, Don Sweeney, said in a statement, “Our organisation will surely miss Danielle and the influence that was made on both our personnel and our players.” “We hope Danielle finds success in her new venture!”
Quinnipiac, which Marmer played and coached for nine years in Hamden, undoubtedly influenced who he is now.
“Some of the most important moments in my development as a leader came during my time as a player at Quinnipiac,” Marmer remarked. “There, Coach Cass Turner is the head coach. She was very explicit in saying that everyone is respected and essential, regardless of where they are on the depth chart or who leads the team in scoring. You’re going to assist us in developing this winning culture since you understand your place in it.
It is anticipated that PWHL play will start in January 2024. At 1 p.m. on Friday, a ten-day window for free agency opens. During this time, each team may sign three players. Teams and venues will be revealed in the upcoming months, and an entry draft is scheduled for September 18.
