Will Bears quarterback Justin Fields’ inability to close play hasten his departure from Chicago?
Alan Williams: Cgo Bears reject rumor FBI raided Halas Hall as mystery surrounds defensive coordinator’s resignation
Links between Chicago Bears’ now-departed defensive coordinator Alan Williams and the FBI have been denounced by the team.
Williams resigned from his position Wednesday afternoon under mysterious circumstances, citing that he was taking time to focus on himself and his family.
A report prior to the announcement told of the FBI raiding the team’s facility; Halas Hall and involved former Bears player-turned-FBI-agent Charles ‘Peanut’ Tillman.
This was rebuked by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and the franchise several hours later.
‘Clarity: — The FBI did not raid Halas Hall today. The league is not involved. Peanut Tillman is not involved whatsoever in this matter,’ Rapoport tweeted.
The Bears spoke to ESPN and described the rumors of Halas Hall being raided as ‘false.’
Williams released a statement earlier this afternoon, announcing he was departing from his position.
‘It is with great regret that I tender my resignation as the Defensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears Football Club effective immediately,’ the statement read.
‘I am taking a step back to care of my health and my family. I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history.
‘I would also like to thank Coach Matt Eberflus and General Manager Ryan Poles for giving me the opportunity to come to Chicago.
‘I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again.’
Williams remained away from the team Wednesday after missing a game for personal reasons, and coach Matt Eberflus would not say if he still has his job.
‘I don’t have any update right now,’ Eberflus said during his press conference.
Head coach Matt Eberflus refused to speak on Williams’ absence from the team on Wednesday
Eberflus gave that exact answers twice more when asked if he anticipates Williams returning this season and if the two have spoken.
Williams, in his second season as Chicago’s defensive coordinator, missed last week’s game at Tampa Bay after working the opener against the Green Bay Packers.
Eberflus, a former defensive coordinator with Indianapolis, called plays against the Buccaneers and plans to do so ‘at this time’ when the Bears (0-2) visit Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
