At the age of 34, a former Gold Glover announces retirement
According to reports, 34-year-old shortstop Andrelton Simmons is retiring after collecting four Gold Glove Awards during his career.
On social media, Angels Insider Jared Tims stated:
SS Andrelton Simmons, formerly of the Angels, has announced his retirement.
Simmons played in the major leagues for 11 years, with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins, and Chicago Cubs. If this is indeed the end for him, it ends here. During his tenure, he was voted the Wilson Overall Defensive Player of the Year and received a Platinum Glove Award, making him one of the top defenders of his period.
With the Braves, he made his main league debut in 2012; in 2016, he joined the Angels. He remained in Los Angeles until 2020 before spending a brief period of time with the Cubs in 2022 and the Twins in 2021. Although he hasn’t played in the major leagues since then, he participated in the World Baseball Classics in 2013 and 2017 and 2023 as a representative of the Netherlands.
Throughout his career, he was fairly durable and participated in over 100 games in eight separate seasons (the COVID-shortened 2020 season was one of the seasons he did not).
Despite being more well-known for his glove than his bat, he had a solid career average of.263 and an on-base percentage of.312. With the Braves in 2013, he hit a career-high 17 home runs, and in 2018 with the Angels, he recorded a career-high 75 RBIs.
He joins Andruw Jones and Jurickson Profar as two of the most well-known players from the island of Curacao. He is one of several talented players from the area.
In his career, he made it to the postseason twice, once with the Braves in 2012 and the other in 2013.
