NEWCASTLE UNITED’S TARGET OF £12M FOR SUNDERLAND HAS COLLAPSED

Sunderland were unable to sign Benjamin Rollheiser from Estudiantes, who was a transfer target for Newcastle United.

Benjamin Rollheiser, a target for Newcastle United, was on the verge of joining Sunderland before the transfer deadline. That is according to Alan Nixon of The Sun, who says that Sunderland has agreed to sign Rollheiser. Sunderland were reportedly planning to loan Rollheiser after reaching a deal with Estudiantes. After being knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana by Corinthians in midweek, the Argentines agreed to let Rollheiser go.Rollheiser had even turned down a move to Russia in order to pursue a move to the Championship.

However, the deal collapsed because Rollheiser’s registration is partly owned by a third party and they didn’t like the terms of the loan.

That meant Rollheiser missed out on his move to Wearside and will remain in Argentina for the foreseeable future.

Newcastle United were interested as well. Rollheiser, Ben

Although Rollheiser was interested in Russia, the North East appeared to be his most likely destination all along. Sunderland were unable to sign the Estudiantes star, but Newcastle United were also intrigued.

Earlier in August, Nixon reported that Newcastle were interested in acquiring Rollheiser for roughly £12 million. Rather than another winger like Rollheiser, the Magpies closed their transfer window with signings for full backs Valentino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

Newcastle may keep an eye on him in the future, with Sunderland almost certain to make another attempt in 2024. Rollheiser has been very impressive recently, with 12 goals and five assists in his previous 41 Estudiantes appearances. The former River Plate man primarily plays on the right flank and cuts inside, prompting Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez to tell Ole that he sees Lionel Messi in Rollheiser. That’s high praise, but the 23-year-old looks set to play in Europe soon, whether with Newcastle, Sunderland, or another club.
