AC Milan made the decision to go after Mehdi Taremi over Romelu Lukaku after some intense internal reflections, according to Franco Ordine.
In his most recent essay for MilanNews, Ordine acknowledges that Lukaku ‘would have been a starter’ for Milan and would have ‘demanded a role’ as the top attacking option.
This became “a fundamental issue,” which led him to give up on the thought of returning to Inter and instead vow to join Max Allegri’s Juventus first before moving on to Roma.
When Lukaku’s name started to circulate as a possibility, Milan had a “very interesting internal debate” and decided to “not spoil the atmosphere at Milanello.”
It was believed that Olivier Giroud and possibly some other squad members may not have seen the addition of a player like Lukaku, who would command such a significant role, with such enthusiasm.
Milan’s mission to find a striker with ‘physical and technical characteristics closer to Giroud and the humility to deputise to the Frenchman’ continued, and that is why they decided to go for Taremi instead.
