Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United has been suspended from football for ten months, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation’s (FIGC) president.
A 10-month suspension and a rehabilitation program are what Gabriele Gravina maintains will happen to the Newcastle new midfield player after an examination into his betting on games while he was at AC Milan.
It means Tonali will miss the remainder of the season for Eddie Howe’s side and be unavailable for Euro 2024, should Italy qualify.
“I have already approved the agreement that the FIGC Prosecutor and Tonali have reached,” declared the FIGC President.
“A 10-month ban, eight months of treatment, and at least sixteen public appearances are all part of the agreement.”
The Italian Football Federation and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office concluded after an investigation that the 23-year-old had broken gambling laws.
After signing a £50 million contract with Newcastle this summer from Milan, Tonali cooperated fully with the inquiry and received a reduced sentence.
Gravina continued, “Rules stipulate a few-year ban, but there may be a plea deal and mitigating circumstances.”
“The guys went above and above in their collaboration, so we’ll stick to the guidelines we set.”
Giuseppe Riso, the midfielder’s agent, revealed that Toni is addicted to gambling and that he has committed to a treatment plan for his gambling issues.
Tonali’s punishment follows Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagiolo’s 12-month ban and five-month suspension in the midst of the largest betting scandal to rock Italian football in over two decades.
