After Tom Fellows made a brief appearance for West Brom in their loss to Birmingham City, Carlos Corberan stated that he thought Fellows would be a very excellent player.
On Friday, October 6, the Baggies fell 3-1 at St Andrew’s. John Swift gave the team the lead early on, but the 20-year-old came on as Albion’s leading scorer suffered an injury halfway through the second half.
Fellows spent the previous season on loan at Crawley Town, but Corberan has showered the winger with praise, indicating he may make more appearances in the upcoming weeks. Fellows made four appearances, including one start for West Brom during the 2021–2022 Championship season.
According to Birmingham Live, he stated on Tuesday, October 10, that he believed Fellows would be a strong player in the Championship. Although he will still require time, I was quite impressed with what I saw of him on the field, and we will typically be observing him much more there.
The Spaniard’s attacking options are restricted, particularly in light of Swift’s injury, which he talked about, stating: “If I had known he was going to get hurt, I would have taken him off and not Wallace.” You never know in football. He wasn’t hurt, no one requested for the change, and then he got a calf injury.
Prospective
Being a young player at a team like West Brom means that you will have to wait for your chance to prove that you are worthy of playing every week; Fellows’ current task is to demonstrate that he can handle it.
While Corberan has never shied away from making adjustments to his teams or from offering young players opportunities to make an impression on the field, Fellows will need to live up to the high expectations placed on him in order to succeed at The Hawthorns.
It was difficult to evaluate his time with Crawley during the previous campaign, since he only managed two assists in more than 2000 minutes of play and failed to score in 28 League Two starts. Had he not already been signed by the Baggies this summer, such stats would have prevented them from taking any action to sign him.
However, Fellows still has a lot of time to acclimate to life at the Championship level—he is only 20 years old—and Corberan’s remarks seem to indicate that he is prepared to allow the Baggies player that time to do so while making sure he plays meaningful minutes.
Corberan doesn’t have many options given The Hawthorns’ current injury difficulties unless some players get.
