Paul Robinson believes that given Willy Gnonto’s “slow start” to the Championship season, his injury won’t have a significant effect on Leeds.
The Italian, who had to leave the field during the first 20 minutes of the Whites’ 0-0 away game against Hull City due to an ankle injury, was confirmed to need surgery on a bone by Daniel Farke, according to Leeds Live (25 September).
Leeds will be shorthanded in terms of offensive options if the forward is out until after the October international break. Gnonto has made five Championship appearances this season following his contentious efforts to leave the club this summer.
Robinson raised the issue of the injury’s effects, saying that a setback to someone like Joel Piroe or Georginio Rutter “would have been more of a blow.
He had a sluggish start to the season due to the distractions and the way he acted in the window to try and obtain the move, and he was only recently returning to the levels you would anticipate.
He seemed to be training well, having the appropriate mindset, and reintegrating into the team before suffering an injury.
I believe the blow would have been worse if Piroe or Rutter had suffered an injury. They are now a part of the squad, so losing one or both of them would be a serious loss.
