Barcelona and Manchester City “agree a permanent contract for 29-year-old defender

According to reports, Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an understanding over a long-term contract for Joao Cancelo.

The 29-year-old joined Camp Nou on loan from Man City at the very end of the summer transfer window. This season, he has played five times for the Catalan team, making two goals and one assist.

Currently, Cancelo has a contract with the treble winners through the summer of 2027, therefore he will return to the Etihad Stadium the next season.

The right-back’s relationship with Citizens head coach Pep Guardiola has soured, though, and it is unlikely that he will play for Man City once more.

When asked recently about a permanent move to Camp, Cancelo stated that he was only concentrating on his performances for Barcelona.

But according to Barcelona’s new director of football Deco, the team is willing to sign the long-term contract of the Portugal international in June 2024.

El Chiringuito claims that a deal has been completed for Cancelo to join Xavi’s team next summer for €35 million (£30.3 million).

The Portuguese player played 21 times for the German team during the second half of the previous season while on loan at Bayern Munich, recording one goal and six assists.

The defender eventually returned to Manchester for preseason training after the Bundesliga champions declined their offer to sign him permanently.

Due to the club’s financial difficulties, a move for Barcelona was viewed as being touch-and-go, but they were able to sign him on a loan before the transfer window shut.

With 154 appearances for the club, nine goals scored, and 22 assists recorded, Cancelo has played a significant role in Man City’s recent success.

Since moving to Camp Nou, the Portuguese right-back has established himself as Barcelona’s top choice, and in the team’s most recent victories over Real Betis and Celta Vigo, he has scored a goal.

For Friday’s La Liga match against Sevilla, where Barcelona will be trying to rebound after a 2-2 draw with Mallorca last time out, Cancelo is once again anticipated to start,
