Report: Giroud maintains derby optimism, but Jovi heats up just in case

Although there is still hope that Olivier Giroud will recover in time for the derby match against Inter, Luka Jovic is warming up just in case.

Giroud had a minor left ankle sprain during the France-Ireland encounter last week, according to this morning’s Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan). The match was a qualifier for the 2024 European Championships.

While it was reported that the setback occurred nine days before the derby, he left the France camp and went back to Italy because the team’s next match was against Germany in a friendly (where Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez participated in yesterday night).

Giroud worked out on his own yesterday at Milanello as planned. The French center-forward, who has started the last eight derbies, will attempt to reunite with the rest of the team today.

Even if his condition is still being watched, he may be able to play in the derby on Saturday, and Luka Jovi, who trained with the team for the first time yesterday after returning from Serbia duty, would be his backup.
