We’re thrilled to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive contributor, as he’ll be providing his thoughts on the most pressing issues at Leeds United each week…
If Illan Meslier leaves Leeds United, Paul Robinson believes Tom Heaton would be an ideal successor.
Leeds’ current No.1 Meslier could leave Elland Road given the club’s relegation and prior links to big clubs [The Sun], implying that manager Daniel Farke will look for a replacement.
Heaton has returned to Manchester United after spells at Burnley and Aston Villa, and he began Eric ten Hag’s pre-season opener against Leeds on Wednesday (12 July).
After making just three senior appearances in the previous three seasons, including a 22-minute cameo for Manchester United in the Champions League, Robinson has advised Heaton to join the Championship team in an effort to regain his starting position.
Robinson remarked in an exclusive interview with MOT Leeds News: “I myself would love to see Tom Heaton sign for the club. He sustained a severe injury at Aston Villa, and Emi Martinez replaced him, thus he was never able to return.
He later moved to Manchester United, however he hardly ever appeared for the first squad. Tom is with him.Knowing Tom and having worked with him, I consider him to be a No. 1 goalie who is eager to play.
“I’ve seen him linked with other clubs as a No 2 this window.” Everton had been linked with him after Begovic left the club. I’ve heard he’s been linked with Luton Town.
.“But for me, if Leeds can pull off a signing of that calibre, I think a goalkeeper of that experience and age would be a great signing for Leeds if Meslier were to leave the club.”
