Brendan McCartney left his position as coach of the Western Bulldogs on Friday. According to president Peter Gordon, the coach’s demise was due to a breakdown in communication with the players.

After the Bulldogs’ lackluster season finale, McCartney’s future was called into question. However, three days earlier, Gordon denied rumors that the coach was on the verge of losing his job in September.

Gordon said that McCartney’s downfall was directly caused by dissatisfied captain Ryan Griffen’s shocking trade request to Greater Western Sydney.

Gordon remarked, “I questioned Macca whether his best judgment was whether he could overcome these new barriers,” during McCartney’s absence from Friday’s Whitten Oval news conference.
