Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco Is Taking His Time
Tom Telesco was appointed general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders over the offseason. Thus far, it is apparent that Telesco is taking a long-term approach.
Soon after the 2023 season concluded, the Las Vegas Raiders appointed Tom Telesco as their new general manager.
During the previous season, Telesco was assigned to one of the National Football League’s highest-paid, yet least productive, offenses. Telesco inherited a roster that included several players who were overpaid. Poor money and talent management under their former regime hurt the Raiders both financially and on the field.
Telesco was assigned the responsibility of pulling the Raiders out of their current predicament after ten years with the Los Angeles Chargers. Thus far, Telesco has upgraded the Raiders’ roster while paying them a reasonable salary with astute free agency signings.
Telesco has already demonstrated that he is well-aware of the Raiders’ organizational landscape by signing defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and selecting which free players to hold onto.
As was the case in the offseason, a number of people recommended the Raiders sign a wide range of high-profile players, the majority of whom the team wisely chose not to do.
The Raiders were primarily advised to make blockbuster trades in the NFL Draft or add high-profile free agents. Although trading up in the draft is still an option for the Raiders, it would seem to go against Telesco’s previous choices.
Undoubtedly, the organization made a big splash with the signing of Wilkins. But there were a few reasons why it was essential. Essentially, it made the team’s defense one of the finest in the league right away.
Anyone paying attention was also informed by the signing of Wilkins that Telesco and the Raiders will not hesitate to spend money on elite players when the opportunity arises.
However, if the Raiders decide against trading valuable draft assets to advance in the draft, that choice, combined with the free agent moves they have already made and plan to make shortly, only serves to demonstrate that Telesco is acting in the Raiders’ best interests in the long run. In his first few seasons with the organization, the seasoned general manager is probably going to steer clear of hazardous decisions that might end up hurting them later on. It appears that the Raiders have a capable general manager who is capable of making wise choices on their own.
The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25–27, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. With the 13th overall pick right now, it belongs to the Las Vegas Raiders.
