49ers and Williams celebrate Lynch and Shanahan’s contract extensions
SANTA CLARA: The 49ers did not reveal multiyear contract extensions for general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan until Friday afternoon.
There was no denying that the 49ers locker room was aware of the news dump.
According to 49ers left tackle Trent Williams, “it means we’re in good hands for as long as the extension is for,” he said to NBC Sports Bay Area. “Those two get along great together. Beyond those two, who is more deserving of an extension? It would be difficult to locate someone.
“It just gives you assurance that the people you’re sacrificing everything for won’t have new faces the following year.”
Shanahan’s contract is set to expire in 2027, whereas Lynch’s is now signed through at least 2026.
The 49ers had some of the worst personnel in the NFL and a disorganized football department in 2017 when CEO Jed York hired Lynch and Shanahan.
With several of their main players having been selected in the middle to late rounds of their combined seven drafts, the 49ers currently boast one of the best rosters in the entire NFL.

Six of the 49ers’ eight players that were included in the most recent NFL Top 100 were also recent draft selections, setting a new league record.
No squad succeeds with every acquisition. However, in order to prevent a setback for the club, the 49ers have shifted to locate someone else—possibly even an upgrade—when they have missed.
According to Williams, their formula is straightforward but not frequently used in the NFL.
Williams remarked, “What makes Kyle and John such a great team is that they don’t care where you were drafted or how much you were paid.” “It makes no difference to them when you entered this locker room and arrived. You will be on the pitch if you can contribute to this team’s victory.
“You respect that the most as a player because politics really do play a big part in this game.”
When the 49ers moved up to get Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, it did not work out. That worked out well since a year later they selected Brock Purdy with the final choice, who turned out to be their long-term quarterback.
“It merely demonstrates that football is not solely focused on a 40-yard sprint,” wide receiver Jauan Jennings, a 2020 seventh-round selection, stated. “Much more exists between the ears than most people know. Those folks seem to have a talent for identifying those players.
In addition to being regarded as one of the best offensive brains in the game, Shanahan has also done an excellent job selecting assistants.
Under Shanahan, Robert Saleh, Mike McDaniel, and DeMeco Ryans were promoted from coordinator to head coach roles.
It was a while before York and the 49ers found a coach-general manager combination that would last. Since taking over the team’s daily operations, York’s hirings of Lynch and Shanahan rank among his best decisions.
Both men have now received extensions from York twice. After the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl in just their third season together, the first contracts were given.
Regarding the players, Williams stated, “it gives you that confidence that you’re going to have the same chiefs every year.” And we’ll be returning the following year with the same message and voice.
