Despite Having the Physical Talent, Patrick Mahomes explains why Travis Kelce could “never be a good quarterback.”
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs talks tough love to his “brother,” Travis Kelce, on his quarterbacking prowess. He even makes his argument with a novel “ping-pong test.”
It’s no secret that in their seven years together, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have grown closer than ever. Together, they have rewritten the Kansas City Chiefs’ history, and their uplifting attitude is evident both on and off the field. Despite their friendship, Mahomes is critical of Kelce’s skills as a quarterback.
Not Everything You Practice Becomes Perfect
When asked if Kelce could play quarterback, Mahomes quickly said, “No,” during an interview for the Kelce Brothers’ “New Heights” podcast. Even though the two players recently surpassed 50 touchdown combinations in NFL history during the 2023 season, Mahomes is adamant that the statistics would be different if they were in the opposite position.
Observing the Chiefs tight end’s practice efforts has reinforced this opinion. The Kelce brothers burst out laughing at this pretty harsh stance; Travis even went so far as to remark, “He isn’t the only one who thinks that.”
Kelce Can’t See Straight
Although Kelce has the physical ability to be a quarterback, the starting quarterback who had guided the team to three Super Bowls continued to state that he lacks the attention span to do the job well. It appears that Kelce accepts the idea that he occasionally has a tendency to “black out.”
The Crucial Ping-Pong Exam
Kelce failed the Mahomes test for reasons more than just his subpar practice performance. A comparable sport was used for Mahomes’ second test: ping-pong! “If you’ve ever played Travis at ping pong, you’ll know why he can’t play quarterback,” Mahomes says in writing.
Andy Reid, the coach of the Chiefs, would concur! Kelce’s “pitiful throwing arm,” according to both Mahomes and Kelce, extinguishes the flame on his quarterback aspirations. Why wouldn’t it, too? Due to his throwing arm, Kelce acknowledges that he is unable to look Coach Reid in the eyes.
It is improbable that he will regain his positions from high school and university. Even in the event that Patrick Mahomes is hurt, it’s reasonable to say that Travis Kelce will not be playing quarterback anytime soon.
