Reasons why the Packers shouldn’t extend Jordan Love’s deal this offseason
It’s no secret that Jordan Love’s contract is being pursued by the Green Bay Packers.
“I believe we’ll go that route. Of course, I believe it will be crucial for our football club to have some consistency there, said Brian Gutekunst, general manager of the Packers. “Jordan and his representation, they’re really good people, so we will start towards that sometime in the next couple of months.”
He definitely made a name for himself among the best quarterbacks in the game after finishing seventh in passing yards (4,159), second in passing touchdowns (32), 11th in quarterback rating (96.1), and ninth in QBR (62.1) at the end of the season.
Though it’s incredible that he’s already performing at such a high level, the fact that this is only his first year in the NFL cannot be disregarded. It also means we’ve only seen one strong year of output from him.
By paying Jordan Love the highest salary of any quarterback in the NFL, the Packers are taking a chance.
According to CBS Sports, Love’s contract deal may be worth over $50 million annually. Assuming he even approaches the $50 million threshold. Love would have the fifth-highest average pay of any NFL quarterback, according to Over The Cap. The top earner, at $55 million annually, is Joe Burrow.
Does another year of excellent play really make a big difference in his salary, given that the Packers are already planning to make him one of the highest-paid players? Green Bay may raise that money closer to $60 million, which isn’t too far from where he’s already predicted, even if he wins MVP and demands to reset the QB market. Would the Packers want to pay that much money if he performed poorly?
The simplest method to demonstrate this is to examine Daniel Jones and the New York Giants. In March 2023, he secured a deal worth $160 million, spanning four years. Jones’ future in New York is questionable less than a year later, plunging them into an unavoidable financial hole.
The Packers must be very certain that Love is their quarterback of the future if they hope to avoid finding themselves in a similar situation. Green Bay need to hold off on offering Love a contract extension until the next season for that reason.
