Packing CEO Perfectly Rejected Fan’s Application for Defensive Coordinator Position
As his tenure as president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers draws to an end, his generosity continues to win over supporters.
Earlier this offseason, an aspirational fan of the Packers applied for the open defensive coordinator position on the team. Murphy sent him the sweetest rejection letter imaginable.
According to Richard Ryman of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Bill Port, the fan who, in a semi-joking attempt to land the then-open DC job, wrote Murphy a cover letter and résumé, got a personalized handwritten reply from the CEO of the Packers.
Murphy turned down Port with the utmost grace, recommending that he look at the Chicago Bears’ job possibilities instead.
Regarding your résumé and cover letter for our defensive coordinator post, I really appreciate it. I regret to notify you that, despite your great fantasy football experience, we have decided to take a different course. The Bears seem to have an opening, and you seem like the ideal fit. Once again, thank you.
Port stated that having played football in high school and winning fantasy football championships were pertinent work experiences, but he would “prefer weekends off.” Prior to Green Bay hiring Matt LaFleur as head coach in 2019, he reportedly applied for the head coaching role as well.
Joking aside, Port was graciously given the cold shoulder by the president of the Packers in an unforgettable letter of rejection. In the end, Green Bay selected Jeff Hafley, a former head coach of Boston College, to be their defensive coordinator.
Murphy has been the president and CEO of the Packers since 2007. The organization’s bylaws stipulate that he must retire at the age of 70 in July 2025, which is when he will do so. On Wednesday, the Packers declared that they had begun the process of selecting a successor for Murphy.
