Darius Slay Gives Eagles Supporters a Direct Message About the Lions Divorce
Darius Slay is hoping to leave Philadelphia after his third season with a chip, something he hasn’t had in ten years. And it would be the cherry on top to be able to fulfill that longtime desire while wearing a midnight green jersey and spending time with his close-knit family. The Eagles have no fear thanks to Slay.
For The Players’ Tribune, Slay wrote an emotional letter to Philadelphia, so this isn’t just lip service. The All-Pro cornerback talks on how difficult it was for him to get to this position and how he didn’t get along with former Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia in it.After that, Slay was traded to Philadelphia, where he belonged and declared, “I’m going to be Slay no matter what.” And the thing about this crew, guy, is that I was welcomed right away.
Slay’s quirky demeanor and leadership style have been well received by the Eagles; this was especially evident when he was voted team captain. At training camp, Slay’s deep bond with Nick Sirianni—”the fact that I’m finally accepted by my head coach,” he wrote—was validated. Slay’s reference to his former coach without mentioning his name says a lot. Their rivalry in Detroit and how it accelerated his departure have been extensively covered in the media. In a humiliating team meeting, Patricia called Slay out before making fun of his custom of switching jerseys following every game—win or lose. Slay was particularly displeased with the Lions front office for failing to work out a contract extension that would have placed him among the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL. He was eventually dealt to the Eagles.
He’s thrilled to be chasing a title in Philadelphia right now.He advised Eagles supporters to focus on each game as it comes up because, if all goes as planned, after three more wins, everyone can celebrate. Despite not being the underdogs, the Eagles nevertheless have a lot riding on them:
The Eagles began their most recent championship run in Week 1 by defeating the Lions 38-35. It was a closely contested game, maybe a little closer than everyone anticipated at the time. Slay had exacted retribution on the team that had drafted him for the second time in three years.
Aside from his own glory, Nick Sirianni made sure to express his thoughts about Slay to the Detroit media before kickoff on September 11 by emphasizing how vital Slay was to the Eagles.
“He desires to support his teammates. He is devoted to his teammates. His goal is to support his colleagues. That devotion for his colleagues is just something I’ve witnessed every day since coming here,” Siriannini said to reporters on September 9. “When I talked to the Detroit reporters yesterday, I made sure they understood it as well because I know that he used to be in that organization. He’s on this team, and I’m really excited about it. He is an excellent leader, teammate, and player.
