Iowa football 2023–24 offseason roster tracker: Hawkeyes players coming in and going out

Transfer portal: next month will see choices about additional years of eligibility.

IOWA CITY The course of events in December and January will significantly affect Iowa’s prospects for 2024.


There will be players that come and go through the transfer site. Others will have to choose between using their additional COVID-19 year of eligibility or entering the NFL Draft.

The Gazette will update the following lists when Iowa football players, both past and present, make these crucial decisions:

Departures via the transfer gateway

• On November 13, Spencer Petras, a former Iowa quarterback, logged into the transfer portal, a source told The Gazette. Petras was no longer a member of the Hawkeye squad. Petras made a Utah State commitment.

• On December 3, defensive back Brennen Deasfernandes declared his plan to use the transfer site.

• On December 4, defensive lineman Anterio Thompson logged into the transfer site. Thompson chose to attend Western Michigan.

• On December 4, Wide Receiver Diante Vines joined the transfer portal.

Joe Labas, a quarterback, used the transfer site on December 5. Labas made a Central Michigan commitment.

NFL Draft selections

 

• Tight finishRather than entering the NFL Draft, Luke Lachey will return for his final season.

Cooper DeJean, a defensive back, has opted not to play his senior year in favor of entering the NFL Draft.

Extra year of eligibility determinations for COVID-19

There is a chance for some players to use their extra COVID-19 year of eligibility in this penultimate senior class. As additional athletes choose to return for a fifth or sixth season, check back here.

· 26-year-old punter Tory Taylor intends to seek a career in the NFL and will not use his additional COVID-19 year of eligibility.

• Nick DeJong, an offensive lineman, will make use of his additional COVID-19 year of eligibility.

Jay Higgins, a linebacker, will make use of his additional COVID-19 year of eligibility.

• Jermari Harris, a defensive back, plans to play one more season of collegiate football at Iowa.

Sebastian Castro, a defensive back, will make use of his additional COVID-19 year of eligibility.

• Iowa linebacker Nick Jackson plans to play a sixth season of collegiate football by using an NCAA waiver.
