Two-time Super Bowl winner Sony Michel has announced his retirement from professional football.
Michel had a relatively short career in the NFL by comparison to other players, but he also won more along the way. The 28-year-old has called time on his career in the league after just five seasons.
The running back enjoyed four years of college football with Georgia before being drafted by the New England Patriots with the No.31 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He would go on to win his first Super Bowl ring in his rookie year in the league.
Michel enjoyed three years in New England before moving to the West Coast and signing for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. Just like in Foxboro, the running back won a Super Bowl ring in his first year with the franchise.

After leaving for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, Michel returned to the Rams this off-season. However, just days after the start of training camp, the running back called time on his NFL career.
Despite being disappointed by the decision, Rams head coach Sean McVay was full of praise for the running back.
“What an incredible player. What a great career this guy has had,” McVay told ESPN.
He added: “It’s a bummer. His body’s feeling like it’s talking to him, and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is and love Sony.”
The retirement of Michel leaves the Rams will very few options at running back. As a result, the front office may consider signing a veteran free agent to go into 2023.

Two high-profile players who fit that description are Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott. Fournette has been a free agent since leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the end of last season, while it’s the same story for Elliott who left the Dallas Cowboys in March.
Rams star Aaron Donald was not informed of Michel’s retirement until he spoke to the media after a practice session. The defensive tackle says that the team, still reeling off a 5-12 season, is determined to get back to the level that saw them win the Super Bowl in 2022.
“Right now, we’re just trying to get back on top,” said Donald. “Obviously, we didn’t have the season we wanted as a team last year.
“Now you are kind of looked over as a team so I feel like we got something to prove. So that is the motivation right there.
“We all need some type of fire, something to push you, something to get you going. And that is something that I am hanging on right now. I feel like we got something to prove as a team, I think I got something to prove as a player.”
